School bus driver's lobbying pays off

17 Oct, 2006 10:03 AM
WORK is currently underway to upgrade several regional roads following 18 months of lobbying by a local bus driver.

Bulahdelah Bus Service's director Daniel Nassif had been lobbying Great Lakes Council in an attempt to get Wattley Hill Rd repaired between The Lakes Way and the Pacific Highway.

Mr Nassif said he was concerned for the safety of the 38 school children who use the service, which runs from Bulahdelah, up the Old Pacific Highway (Wootton Way) to Wattley Hill Rd, to The Lakes Way near Bungwahl, down The Lakes Way to the Pacific Highway and onto Bulahdelah twice a day.

"I have been run off the road once as the road is not wide enough for two vehicles to pass side by side due to the overhanging trees and there are logging trucks using that road," he said.

"A number of the children are now being driven to school by their parents as they are concerned by the danger.

"It is not such a problem for cars because the overhanging trees are up high and the cars aren't as wide a vehicle."

In the last 18 months, Mr Nassif has spent over $15,000 repairing his fleet of three buses; including replacing three left hand side mirrors destroyed by overhanging trees, refitting all the windows in the buses and replacing the suspension components on one bus (which was less than 120,000 km old).

"Wattley Hill Road is in exceptionally bad condition; there are potholes 20 centimetres deep in places, the road really needs to be tar sealed. I only drive at 40 kilometres per hour so it is not as though I am speeding."

Council's manager transport assets, Mike Keegan confirmed that a number of works were taking place in that area.

Among the work being carried out is: the clearing of brush along Wattley Hill Rd, the clearing of brush along Ferny Creek Rd, routine bitumen maintenance of The Lakes Way, Mayers Flat and the removal of graffiti on The Lakes Way at Kolonock Range.

In further works council will provide a gravel pad for the bus to stop on next to The Lakes Way at Hubbards Rd South, Shinglers Creek Rd and Violet Hill Rd as part of its current gravel re-sheeting program. Council will also grade Wattley Hill Rd in the near future as part of its current maintenance program.

Mr Keegan said council has also allocated $150,000 for the construction and sealing of a section of Wattley Hill Rd just west of Topi Rd, with the work to be done this financial year.
