Seniors take on techno challenge

15 Apr, 2008 07:50 AM
THE door to the world of digital technology and cyber space was opened a little wider for seniors during six free presentations at the Tea Gardens Community and Technology Centre last week.

Techno-seniors presentations were run by volunteers at the centre over three days in conjunction with NSW Seniors Week.

Digital movie making, tracing family trees, digital cameras, computers for beginners, recording LPs to CDs and being cyber safe were the focus during the presentations.

The CTC decided to tackle seniors week through presentations rather than workshops to open up the activities to a larger audience.

“We chose the demonstration style because it allows a bigger group, this way we can have unlimited numbers,” CTC president Lyn Reid said.

The CTC has been carrying out activities for Seniors week over the past number of years and Ms Reid said people know to what to expect and what is on offer each year.

Around 110 people attended the demonstrations this year, on par with previous numbers.

CTC member Dennis Ballard focused on the issues of cyber safety for seniors in a Thursday morning presentation; reinforcing that they were only one group that was vulnerable when surfing the web.

“The presentation alerted them to the dangers when they are on the net and how to protect themselves from viruses and trojans,” Mr Ballard said.

“Senior people are likely to be caught by phishing exercises,” Mr Ballard said.

Phishing is when a fraudster pretends to be from a legitimate organisation and requests your personal and financial information.

“Once they have your identity they can carry out the fraud,” Mr Ballard said.

This is not the first presentation the CTC has run on cyber safety.

“People get stung everyday and it is good to re-iterate,” Mr Ballard said.

The CTC has had a very good response to previous presentations from the seniors in the community but said it was then important for them to take the message to their families who also need to be aware of the dangers.

The demonstrations, catering and organisations are run by volunteers connected to the centre.

“All the volunteers worked extremely hard over the three days,” Ms Reid said.
