Slab to finish shed

05 Dec, 2007 08:08 AM
The laying of a cement slab behind the Tea Gardens Rural Bushfire Brigade shed was completed last week with help from volunteers in the brigade and local concreter, Robo from Concrete Satisfaction.

The slab will be used to accommodate a new wash bay section for the vehicles, which will be used to clean the trucks when they come back from fires.

Captain Steve Charmical, deputy captain Trevor Cumins and Les Reynolds donated their time to lay the concrete which was purchased at a discounted price from Hunter Concrete.

Money has been raised by the Tea Gardens Rural Bushfire Brigade via donations from local businesses and a raffle on a Thursday night at the Tea Gardens Pub.

“The rural bushfire service does rely on some support from the community and from local businesses,” Tea Gardens Rural Fire Service equipment officer and treasurer Ian Mackenzie-Smith said.

The back area of the shed will be developed for training purposes in the near future.

There are 10 trainee bush fire fighters in the brigade.

“With the anticipation of a busy season coming up we will be working hard to improve our fire fighting skills to give the local community the level of protection they have come to expect from the brigade,” Mr Mackenzie-Smith said.

Once the back area is developed the shed will be finished, four years after the opening.

“It has taken the past four years to get the money together to do the work,” he said.
