Last month the death of Shellay Ward rocked the community of Hawks Nest.
Needing to come to terms with the death of the young girl, local singer Natalie Foley wrote a song to help the community grieve for the young girl they knew nothing about.
“I felt like she had a non-existent life,” Natalie said.
“It affected me that much I wrote a song about it.”
The death of Shellay, who allegedly died of starvation in her home on Saturday, November 3, was a tragedy for the community who did not know of her situation until it was too late.
“The whole community was grieving, if we had known we would have done something to help,” Natalie said.
Natalie needed to do something to help with the grieving process and to help undo some of the emotional damage done to the town.
She also wanted to help other children, like Shellay, in need.
“I wanted to put the words down,” Natalie said.
She wrote and sang the song before having it properly recorded.
Since the initial recording Natalie has shown the song to many people who have needed to hear what happened and the feelings of the community.
“As people heard it they wanted to have the song.”
Natalie is planning to sell the song, My Name is Shellay (Precious Angel), through Acito’s Cafe in Hawks Nest and donate the profits to a charity that will help children in foster homes.
“It will help the community in grieving, and it made me feel a bit better,” Natalie said.
Natalie also wants to set up a memorial for Shellay somewhere in the town.
