RECENT cuts to the Special Childcare Rebate has put extra strain on families who relied on its assistance, including one Great Lakes family whose respite care was cut just before Christmas.
Reassessed every three months, the Family Assistance Office chopped the rebate payments to more than 60 families, 31 of which are under urgent review.
Member for Paterson, Bob Baldwin said he had a "heartbreaking meeting" with the Great Lakes family whose respite care was cut.
The father works a full-time job to support the family while the mother suffers fibromyalgia which means she cannot lift or carry her children.
Their six year old girl has aspergers and ADHD and their three year old boy suffers cerebral palsy with spasticity and dystonia which requires him to be fed via a gastrostomy tube inserted into the stomach.
"The carer would help feed and mind the children so that their mother could do simple tasks such as the groceries, washing and cooking," Mr Baldwin said.
Mr Baldwin said after a desperate plea, the carer was reinstated temporarily but the family and others like it had no medium or long term guarantee that they would get the support they needed.
"The best thing the government can do is ensure that these parents who are doing their best to hold the family together in extremely difficult circumstances through no fault of their own, get the long term support they need," Mr Baldwin said.
Mr Baldwin has urged anyone affected by the cuts to to get in contact with his office on 4983 1330 so he can make a representation to the minister.
