Tea Gardens Public stops for NAIDOC Day

26 Jul, 2007 07:51 AM
On Wednesday, July 18, the students of Tea Gardens Public School celebrated NAIDOC Day.

Organised by parent Jan Webb the day was highly successful.

The students were entertained by special guest John Ridgeway, an elder of the Worrimi nation, who spoke to the children about his life and voluntary commitments among many communities.

John also entertained us with his superb singing and guitar playing.

Another feature of the day was a performance and workshops by the 'Croc Fest' dancers from Hunter River High School at Raymond Terrace.

The children were treated to Aboriginal dance depicting kangaroo's, goanna's and emu's accompanied by authentic Aboriginal music.

Students also enjoyed performing these dance movements during the workshops.

A cake celebrating the day was cut at the conclusion of the assembly by Lyn and Leah Slockee, Luke Bowden, Courtney Webb, Adrian Curry and John Ridgeway.

Following the performances, students participated in activities associated with NAIDOC Day organised by staff including activities such as Aboriginal art, craft, drama, dance and games.

To conclude festivities, students were treated to a sausage sizzle and ‘tucker tasting' of kangaroo and wallaby.

Many were surprised to learn that kangaroo and wallaby have different flavours.

Thank you to Graeme Webb, Jock Williams, Maria Duroux, Tay King and the canteen ladies Christine Wisemantel, Debbie Smart and Louise Stonestreet for their assistance.
