BEFORE the 2009 school year was out, the Myall Coast Rotary Club ran their annual Career Awareness Day at the Tea Gardens Primary School.
Although students are still years off having to decide what to undertake as a vocation, the impact of hearing a variety of professionals tell them about their jobs is an important one.
After the program’s second successful year, school principal, Sue Estens, has expressed her enthusiasm and asked the Rotary Club to make it a regular annual event.
A number of local businesses and organisations were approached to participate, with a guest speaker sent to talk to the students.
Representatives included our local Ambulance officer, a hairdresser, a real estate employee, an engineer, a Rotary member talking on work ethics, a builder and a horticulturalist.
Each lecturer gave a 10 minute summary of their jobs and the advantages of choosing it as a profession.
The hairdresser chose a student from each group and gave a brief demonstration of their craft.
The students listened with a great deal of interest, asking a variety of questions.
A popular lecturer last year was our local police officer but, much to the disappointment of the students, he was unable to attend due to pressure of work commitments.
The co-operation between the Primary School and the Rotary Club continues with the club sponsoring and constructing a vegetable plot in the school grounds.
The students will tend the plot and harvest the produce resulting from their labors. The vegetables will then be used in the school domestic science class.
