TEA Gardens Public School has shown it is ahead of the rest when it comes to numeracy.

Federal Minister for Education, Science & Training, Julie Bishop, paid a visit to the school recently, in order to present a highly commended award for their outstanding numeracy results recognised at National Literacy and Numeracy Week.

These awards acknowledge school communities for outstanding work to improve students' literacy and/or numeracy outcomes.

Along with Tea Gardens Public School, 43 schools received highly commended awards, including Great Lakes College.

The schools had to meet the criteria of progressing the national literacy and numeracy plan, demonstrating significant value-adding to student outcomes, involving parents and the wider community in the program and ensuring sustainability of the initiatives.

With the assistance of Year 4 students Bradley Kirkpatrick and Ashley Beatty, Principal of Tea Gardens Public School Sue Estens proudly accepted the award, a cheque for $5,000, from Ms Bishop and Federal Member for Paterson Bob Baldwin.

"We had to decide which to apply for - literacy or numeracy, because our results were both very good," Ms Estens said.

Ms Bishop said she was delighted to be able to make the presentation to the school for an awards program that is recognised by the Australian Government. "Tea Gardens Public School is one of 43 schools across the country that was recognised for its outstanding work in numeracy."

Ms Bishop explained to the students that numeracy would prove to become very important in later life, as it is an essential skill required in the workforce.

"What you learn at primary school sets the basis for the rest of your life, and I hope you continue to learn throughout your life."

Ms Bishop added that teachers needed to be thanked also.

"They are the ones who help you and guide you and we should recognise the important role that teachers play."
