The Myall Coast gets a clean up

12 Mar, 2008 02:43 PM
Tea Gardens Hawks Nest was a lot cleaner after 25 volunteers put in a couple of hours picking up rubbish on Clean Up Australia Day.

In spite of the rain and chill 26 garbage bags filled with paper, bottles and cans were brought in by the volunteers.

A trailer was also used to pick up the larger items which included two old lawn mowers, an ironing board, a car bumper bar and a pile of wire.

A couple of workers even came back to the base saturated, but undaunted by the rain, hauling the rubbish others had tossed aside.

Over the course of the morning some volunteers battled with bush to get out the bottles and cans so casually thrown in.

A young local family worked to clear a part of Mungo Brush Rd of unsightly trash, and for the moment this road now looks good. To the people, young and old, who volunteered, thankyou.

The Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association is so appreciative of the effort, that a lucky dip of volunteers’ names was organised for a $25 meal voucher at the Tea Gardens Country Club.

The lucky winner was Heidi Reid and we all say it was well earned.

It was heartening to note a marked decrease in general litter and cigarettes butts seen.

Perhaps people are more aware and now dispose of their rubbish properly, or it might be that the many walkers in this area are collecting litter on their daily walks.

Sadly, there is still illegal dumping of white goods, car bodies and garden tailings in more remote bush areas.
