Time to fire up the barbie

22 Jan, 2009 09:58 AM
IT’S time to fire up the barbecue, turn on the cricket, bake some lamingtons or do whatever you think is our most celebratory activity because Australia day is on its way.

Great Lakes Council will kick off official proceedings on Monday with an awards ceremony at Club Forster from 10.30am and an official ceremony following at 11am.

Nine local residents will be officially recognised as Australian citizens while Camp Quality, Cape Hawke Pink Ladies, War Widows Guild, Disabled Alliance and Forster Tuncurry Legacy will be recognised in the Mayor’s Awards for their dedication and contribution to our community.

Further south the Bulahdelah and District Historical society will hold a barbecue lunch for families followed by a screening of The Whaledreamers.

In Coomba the day will coincide with the annual Coomba Fest where locals and holidaymakers are welcomed to get involved in a day of activities.

There will be a raft race as well as the picnic, sack and three legged races and later you can pick up a unique knick knack at the community market stalls with books and plants plus craft. Crowds will be entertained by live music from the Staunch G Men and for those wanting their 15 minutes of fame there’s the talent fest.

Meanwhile in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest the local Lioness Club invites people to visit the flag raising ceremony in Hawks Nest Park where there will be children’s races and karaoke, plus a flypast by the RAAF.

So get your brood together and celebrate Australia Day Great Lakes style.
