Upgrades to Korsmans Landing Camping Area

18 Jul, 2006 11:27 AM
KORSMANS Landing Camping Area in Myall Lakes National Park will be temporarily closed until Friday, September 29, to allow for the redevelopment and upgrade of visitor facilities in the popular camping area.

This work is part of an on-going commitment to the redevelopment and upgrade of visitor facilities and camping areas in Myall Lakes National Park, as identified in the Myall Lakes National Park Plan of Management.

Due to its close proximity and easy access to the lake, Korsmans Landing is a very popular camping area for large family groups and water skiers.

The redevelopment works will include a new gravel car park, waste and recycling station, and replacement of temporary fencing and signs with permanent structures.

National Parks and Wildlife (NPWS) Hunter Region acting manager, Naomi Stephens, believes this will provide better facilities for visitors and enhance the overall area.

"Wood barbeques will also be installed in the camping area and visitors will be expected to use these, to reduce fire scarring to grassed areas", said Ms Stephens.

The planned upgrade work is in addition to facility upgrades already completed, including the installation of an eco-friendly hybrid toilet and an interpretative shelter to provide visitors with information about the natural and cultural values of the area.

On-going tree risk assessment has also been conducted in the camping area, and hazard reduction works have been undertaken.

"While the temporary closure of the area may inconvenience some people, it has been scheduled at a time when visitation to the area is at its lowest," explained Ms Stephens.

As an alternative, there are 18 other camping areas currently available in Myall Lakes National Park.

Four camping areas along the broadwater in Myall Lakes National Park are currently being rested for rehabilitation during the quieter winter months. These include Mungo South Camping Area, White Tree Bay Camping Area, The Wells Camping Area and Stewart and Lloyd's Camping Area.
