Karuah SES members were among a group of personnel who were presented with medallions to commemorate their hard work during the June long weekend storms.
The NSW SES Brigade director general Phillip McNamara presented the members of Nabiac, Karuah Valley and Forster and Pacific Palms units with the medallions at the Nabiac Unit Headquarters.
The response from the SES units lasted from June 8 to June 24, when an east coast low pressure system lashed the Hunter and Central Coast with rain and strong winds.
The Great Lakes was spared the worst, but Newcastle and the Hunter felt Mother Nature’s full fury, with 124kph wind and 293mm of rain in 24 hours causing serious flash flooding in the city of Newcastle.
Resulting in major riverine flooding in the Hunter Valley and the Pasha Bulker forced aground on Nobby’s Beach.
The event caused 19,959 requests for assistance to SES, making this the second largest response operation in NSW SES history.
As the response work in Great Lakes was winding down, members from our units headed to the Hunter and Lake Macquarie areas to assist in flood and storm response operations there.
Thirty-two members as well as casual volunteers from our three units were presented with medallions by Brigadier McNamara.
