DENTAL records have failed to identify a person killed in a crash along the Lakes Way last week. Around 11.30am on Wednesday, December 3, police were called to the single vehicle accident at Boolambayte.
“The Toyota Camry sedan was travelling east along the Lakes Way when it was driven off the road and collided with a tree,” Bulahdelah police senior constable Patrick Schaefer said.
The driver was killed on impact and the body was incinerated when the car caught alight.
Police were unable to identify the driver at the scene and were hoping to use dental records.
On Monday, it was discovered the dental records were insufficient to confirm the driver’s identity and police would now have to wait on DNA results.
Senior constable Schaefer said it could take weeks for the driver’s identity to be confirmed.
Forensic police attended the scene to examine the accident and recover the driver’s remains.
Tyre marks indicated the car left the road about 80m before it hit the tree but no brake marks were found on the tar.
“From the state of the vehicle, it would be reasonable to conclude speed could have been a factor,” Manning Great Lakes Local Area Command Inspector Allan Fidock said.
Rural Fire Service brigades from Boolambayte and Bulahdelah were called to the scene to extinguish the fire.
“The fire only affected a small area, but with the dry conditions it was a threat,” Inspector Fidock said.
Ambulance and Voluntary Rescue Association personnel also attended the scene along with Great Lakes Council who assisted with traffic control.
Investigations are continuing and a report has been prepared for the coroner.
