Waste management: it's up to you

15 Jan, 2009 10:53 AM
THE Great Lakes community has earned its reputation as being successful at reducing waste and increasing recycling efforts as shown in this year's State of the Environment Report.

However we all need to make sure that this continues throughout the holiday period.

To make things a little easier for residents and holiday makers alike, council is providing a few extra services during the festive season as well as encouraging everyone to continue to be conscious of their recycling efforts.

Temporary litter bins have been installed in the Bulahdelah CBD and bulk bins will be placed in Hawks Nest, Tea Gardens, Pindimar and North Arm Cove.

Extra recycling during the holiday period will be accepted free of charge at councils waste management centres.

It is also important to remember when we are out on the water fishing to use the tangler bins located along our foreshores.

These bins are for the use of bait bags, disused fishing line with lead and hooks.

Unwanted fishing tackle that is left in our waterways can cause considerable damage to our marine life through entanglement.

The fishing line collected is recycled into more fishing line, so remember to keep your fishing spot tidy and help preserve what you are here to enjoy.
