AFTER the Kooragang Island oil spill a fortnight ago local Native Animal Trust Fund (NATF) volunteer David Matheson has asked the community to keep a close eye on pelicans in the area.
As migratory birds, there is a chance pelicans from Newcastle Harbour could be in the area.
President of NATF and disaster coordinator Audrey Koosmer said there was no reason why affected birds wouldn’t have flown to the Tea Gardens area.
While the spill was quickly contained, a number of pelicans have been left covered in oil and the clean up is ongoing.
“The pelicans we have rescued so far are covered in black oil on their front and their pouches, their legs are black, watch out and if you see anything call us,” she said.
Ms Koosmer asked that members of the public don’t try and clean up the pelicans themselves, as it requires a 24-hour process.
First the bird is sprayed with canola oil and left for a day before it is washed and re-hydrated.
So far NATF have rescued 28 pelicans and have been working around the clock.
If you spot a pelican that looks like it has been affected by the spill, call the NATF 24-hour emergency line on 0418 628 483.
