 What's in a name?

What's in a name?

19 Dec, 2006 01:52 PM
LOCAL historian Rex Hill requested council at its last meeting to change the name of Witts Island to 'Slip Island'.

Mr Hill provided some historical facts regarding the use of the island to support his request.

"The island is presently named after John Witt, who never set foot on the island in the 14 years he lived here.

"Mr Witt's only connection with the island was that he instructed his young boatman, Joe Pearce, to moor his launch ‘The Wanderer' on the island," he said.

In 1913, Henry Engel took out a lease on the island so he could construct a large slipway on which to build substantial boats and provide more employment for the men of Tea Gardens.

The construction of many boats and the employment of a large group of local men saw common usage of the name ‘Slip Island' over the next 27 years.

"Witt used the place for his boat for only 14 years yet it was a slipway for the best part of 30 years, so in my opinion Slip Island would be a much more appropriate name for the island," Mr Hill said.

The island in the Myall River has gone through various stages of life, with the first stage being a pristine home for pelicans.

"This island was first named Pelican Island by Jabez Buckman in 1856 to honour the many pelicans that made their home there," Mr Hill said.

The next stage saw John Witt moor his launch there, then the island came to life in stage three and boats were built, repaired and lay to rest there. "I sincerely hope that it will be realised that the people who worked so hard on the island for the best part of 30 years certainly deserve to have the island named ‘Slip Island' in their honour.

"A name change would also, indirectly, pay respect to Henry Melvin Engel, the man who was the driving force behind the establishment of the slipway on the island," he said.

This isn't the first time the renaming of the island has been raised, with Councillor Roberts raising it for discussion a while ago.

Great Lakes Council's Mayor, Clr John Chadban, explained that there are processes you have to go through to change names.

"Investigations have commenced in relation to this issue and a report will be prepared for council's consideration," Clr Chadban said.
