Yabbies start racing early

BULAHDELAH has been put in the national spotlight while Australian comedians Hamish and Andy visited the town on their Caravan of Courage tour.

The comical pair was travelling from Perth to Brisbane, where they would end their tour on the Sunday night program Rove.

The duo stopped in Bulahdelah to take part in a mock yabby race before the legitimate annual Yabby Fest race the following day.

The mock race was held at the Bulahdelah Caravan Park with a few locals and three yabbies under the names of Hamish, Andy and Rove.

Hamish, Andy and Rove (the yabbies) won the trifecta, causing locals to protest that urine samples be taken. However Bret, the official judge on the day, declared all was well and above board.

Bulahdelah featured in footage shown on Rove on Sunday, October 12.

The official Yabby Fest was run on Saturday, October 13. A record number of people visited the Yabby Fest this year with the number of stalls also increasing from previous years.

“The festival is growing every year and can only benefit to put Bulahdelah on the map once the bypass goes around the town,” local resident Anne-Marie Barry said.

Bidding on the yabbies to race this year was fierce, with one punter bidding $82 to secure a place in the race. There were 24 yabbies donated by the yabby growers and traders on offer.

Four heats of six yabbies were run on the day before a hotly contested grand final.

The grand final was won by Heather Stead of Newcastle. The Plough Inn Hotel provided a jumping castle on the day, keeping children entertained while parents browsed the stalls.

The Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor club displayed its vintage and classic vehicles while many local charities used the opportunity to have their own stalls as a means of fundraising for themselves. Everything from snails, worms and yabbies to fine wines, gingerbread and cakes was on display.

The big winner of the day was the Bulahdelah Central School P and C association who was the major beneficiary this year. The association raised $1340 through stall fees and the proceeds of the Yabby Auction. Staffs at the Plough Inn Hotel are already starting plans for next year with October 11, 2008, set for next years Yabby Fest.
