FOUR Tea Gardens runners will compete in the Little Athletics State Championships after some astounding results at the regional carnival held in Tamworth over the weekend.
Tea Gardens Runners trainer Charles Ringuet said not only did they come up against some of the region’s best competitors, but the young athletes had to contend with warm temperatures reaching 40 degrees.
“The conditions were atrocious but we managed the best we could,” Mr Ringuet said.
“They all deserve these results. Everyone has put in so much, they train very hard.”
In the under 9s, Cooper Jenkins managed to win both the 100m and 200m.
Coming up against some fierce competition in his four events, Matthew Williams managed a personal best in the under 11s 1500m, coming third.
He also ran third in the 800m, fourth in the 400m and seventh in the triple jump.
Achieving personal bests in both events, Alexia Bednarczyk came fourth in the 200m, securing a reserve position for the State Championships, while coming sixth in the under 12s long jump.
Competing in six events in the under 13s, Kayley Alsford came second in the 200m hurdles, sixth in the 800m hurdles, sixth in the 400m, fifth in the 800m, fifth in the 1500m and fifth in the 3000m. In the under 13s, Carl Williams won all three of his events, picking up some personal best times along the way.
Winning the 800m, he beat his best time by three seconds in the 1500m, and cut a massive 21 seconds off his previous time in the 3000m.
They will compete in the State Championship held next month at Homebush in Sydney.
For the fourth year, Tea Gardens Runners will resume the handicap series Sunday March 28 at 8am.
