SHOOTING hoops in his backyard and a hectic training schedule have seen Tea Gardens youth Tim Palmer gain a spot on an invitational basketball team.
The 16-year-old has been invited to join an elite group touring America in December.
Palmer was selected for the group after a tryout at a training camp in Sydney during the July school holidays.
“We got to tryout for the tour and they picked kids from the camps,” Palmer said.
The basketball camps were held in all capital cities.
Palmer was one of three boys selected from the NSW camp and will join five boys from Victoria and two from Queensland on tour.
“We will play in two three day tournaments and in games against high schools and one prep college,” Palmer said.
The group will attend an LA Lakers game and training session before touring around Los Angeles, Phoenix, Albuquerque, Nevada and New Mexico.
The Threatt Australian All Stars team will be coached by former NBA player Sedale Threatt.
Threatt played in the NBA for 14 years.
Palmer is on a six day training schedule with his local team and trains in shooting and dribbling on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and Monday, Wednesday and Friday in strength and agility.
Tuesday and Thursday are also dedicated to running.
“But I train everyday myself,” Palmer said.
Palmer plays with the Newcastle Hunters representative team on a Monday and Wednesday.
He has been a member of the team for seven years.
Palmer has been playing basketball for the past 8 years, starting when he was in year two.
“I saw it on TV once and I started playing in Raymond Terrace and I just liked it,” Palmer said.
Attending Tea Gardens Public School through his primary years Palmer now attends Hunter Valley Grammar.
He was awarded the Junior Sportsman of the Year Award in 2004 and has been involved in many other sports including nippers, soccer, swimming club, golf and surfing.
