Local girl travels to Shanghai for Special Olympics

24 Oct, 2007 08:18 AM
The Special Olympics World Summer Games, for intellectual disabilities, was held in Shanghai from October 2 to 11.

The Australian Special Olympics team won a variety of medals in many events including swimming, bocce and bowls.

Many personal best records were also made.

Karen White, daughter of Janet Single from Bulahdelah, came fifth in singles bocce, won gold as a member of the Australian team bocce event with Craig Woolley and a bronze in the doubles with Brooke Ackland.

Karen has been participating in the Australian Special Olympics for a number of years as part of the swimming, netball and bocce teams.

This is her first international competition after winning gold in bocce at the National event in Queensland last year.

Karen is 52 years old, 10 years older than most of her other team mates, and has been playing bocce for three years.

Congratulations to all participants.
