Karuah Sharks start 2012 with double loss

11 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
THE start of 2012 has seen the Dungog Cricket Association split the open division into A and B grade.

Karuah is now placed in the A grade competition along with Paterson, Wallaroba, Pirates and Gresford.

On Saturday the Karuah RSL Sharks played Paterson in both A and C grades.

A grade played at home and was in the field first and Paterson made a steady start to its innings with the openers putting on 45 in 18 overs before a regular fall of wickets saw them struggling at 6/109 after 31 overs.

The run rate increased in the last 10 overs to post 8/163 runs. Wicket takers were Josh Simms and Brad Pinch with two each and Rod Berry, Mark Johnson and Arron Bills one each.

The run chase began briskly with 59 runs scored in the first five overs for the loss of Josh Simms, Brent Bills was typically aggressive with four sixes and three fours in his innings of 44 and was ably assisted by Ben Coggin with 36 but the Sharks could not build enough good partnerships although they kept in front of the required run rate and fell just six runs short of the Paterson total.

The C grade team travelled to Paterson to battle with the competition front runners. The Sharks were lacking a little firepower in the bowling department but it was an opportunity for others to step up.

Batting first the Sharks were in early trouble with the loss of consistent opener Bob Zelkie in the second over.

Matt Davies and Sam Rees held thnigs together for 10 overs then a flurry of wickets put the Sharks in troubled waters at 5/38.

Ned Jury joined Rees at the crease and helped increase the score to 90 before Rees dismissal for 56, unfortunately the tail did not wag and the Sharks were dismissed for 98.

With a smallish score to defend the Sharks were aggressive in its approach to getting wicket and was working early although leaking a few runs.

Tom King picked up a wicket first ball and Tige Ingram bowling first change also picked up a couple of cheap wickets with the assistance of Bob Zelkie taking both catches.

The Jury brothers chimed in with wickets, Jim with two and Ned with one With a bit of luck and a couple of half chances taken a bit more pressure may have been applied.

Paterson was too good on the day passing the Sharks six wickets down.

Next week the A grade has a bye and C grade plays Gresford at home.
