Bike week event hosted on wild side

19 Sep, 2008 09:52 AM
This year’s Wild Side Festival in Hawks Nest will feature a new cycling event.

Two cycling routes have been arranged including a family friendly ride around Hawks Nest and Winda Woppa and a 25km enthusiasts ride through the Myall Lakes National Park and across the ferry at Bombah Point to the Myall Shores Eco Resort.

Running as part of the Roads and Traffic Authorities (RTA) Bike Week campaign, entry is free.

Both rides depart at 9am from the Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club and all participants will receive a certificate of participation.

Cycleway Task Force chairman Adrian Ryan said the day has been designed to promote the area to cyclists, raise awareness of the health and environmental benefits of cycling and show off our beautiful scenery.

“Hawks Nest Tea Gardens offer an ideal environment for cyclists, with mostly level terrain, quiet roads and interesting places to stop,” Mr Ryan said.

The family ride, ocean to ocean has two options.

A short option of about 6km will cater for smaller children and casual cyclists while a longer option of 10km is for riders with more energy.

Both routes will return to the starting point at the surf club where a barbecue will be operating to satisfy the appetite.

The family ride also offers the opportunity to learn a little of the history of the area, with several checkpoints featuring a local character dressed in period costume.

The enthusiasts ride, ocean to lakes, is designed for the more advanced riders starting from the surf club along Mungo Brush Rd to Myall Shores Eco Resort, where a barbecue lunch will be available.

Transport can be arranged for those who do not wish to cycle back to the starting point at the Hawks Nest Surf Club.

Ride on the Wild Side is being delivered as part of the Wild Side Festival which runs from September 19 to 21, and includes a suite of attractions such as a koala spotlighting walk, bird watching, river cruise, helicopter joy flights, a food and wine street fair and a party on the Saturday night at Oceanside.

This is the official festival function and features a free cocktail on arrival, live band and finger food.

Attractive accommodation packages have been put together by the Myall Shores Eco Resort, Oceanside Motel in Hawks Nest and the Tea Gardens Hotel Motel.

Ride on the Wild Side will take place on Sunday, September 21, and entry forms can be downloaded off the website www.wildsidefestival.com.au or phone Adrian on 4997 0611.
