AFTER setting the pace for the majority of the season, the Bullets Ladies found themselves in a knockout situation during this year’s semi finals.
After slipping to third position at the completion of the regular season the ladies were sent into a sudden death play-off with fourth placed Lansdowne Lionesses.
Regarded by many as the two best teams in the competition, and with the reality that only one team would progress through the finals series, the scene was set for an explosive semi final.
Travelling to South St in Tuncurry on yet another cold, wet and windy night, and missing five regular starters, the girls had to put aside the conditions, knowing that their season was now on the line.
From the opening minutes of the match it was clear that neither side was going to give however it would be the bullets who would gain the upper hand via a Kelly Plowman special, sending the Bullets to the break 1-0.
Knowing that the job was only half done the Bullets lifted their intensity, defending off any challenge mounted on their goal by the lionesses, when late in the second stanza, and against the run of play, the Bullets conceded a very unlucky goal, that wasn’t without its controversy.
Putting the goal behind them the Bullets got on with the job, almost sealing the match in the dying minutes through a brilliant individual run down the left side by Jade Hugo, only to see the lionesses keeper make an impressive save and send the match into golden goal extra time.
With both teams on their last legs it would be Lansdowne who would progress as their ball found its way into the Bullets net.
After the disappointment of being eliminated the Bullets can still hold their heads high after a marathon never say die effort in one of the closest seasons to date.
