ONLY five weeks into the 2008 football season and the Bulahdelah Bullets ladies team look set for a great year, being deemed by many as the favourites to take out the title.
The ladies currently sit on top of the premiership table with an impressive four wins and one draw.
Round one saw the bullets kick off their season away to the Tuncurry Forster Hawkettes at South St Tuncurry.
The girls held off a flurry of attack from the Hawkettes in the first 20 minutes to go on and dominate the remainder of the match taking home a 1-0 win with Cathryn Guthrie slotting home the match winner.
Round two again would see the bullet girls travel to Tuncurry to face an old foe in the Lansdowne Lions.
Expecting a very tough match the bullets were keen to get this one under their belt. The bullets didn’t disappoint with a 2-0 victory; the lions unable to match the bullets for pace and fitness.
The nights best performer went to vice captain Kelly Plowman who found her new calling as a striker after scoring two great goals.
Going into the round three match at Forster beaming with confidence the bullets girls never looked like losing this one.
Captain Janna-Bree Dowling opened her goal scoring account for the season, along with Katie (Fred) Robards, Sara Longworth and newcomer Jade Hugo (2). Final score bullets 5, greenpoint 0.
The most valuable player on the park went to Katie Robards whose running forays down the right side gave the opposition headaches all night.
Round four and the bullets headed back to Tuncurry to face the Old Bar Devils. In a first half of missed opportunities the bullets looked a little shaky failing to find the back of the net on several occasions. You wouldn’t be blamed for thinking that the bullets were fielding a different team in the second half as they stepped up a couple of gears, pouring on a further 13 goals to seal a 15-0 thumping.
Goals went to Kelly Plowman 6, Katie Robbards 2, Sara Longworth 2, Becky Barry 2, Janna-Bree Dowling 1, Cathryn Guthrie 1 and Jessica Cook 1.
Kelly Plowman picked up the most valuable player of the night award.
Friday, May 9, saw the bullets again travel to South St Tuncurry, this time to face last years semi-final opponents the Tinonee Flacons.
Depleted on numbers the bullets were expecting a tough night of football against another of the front runners in this season’s competition.
With massive efforts in defence the bullets were able to weather the storm in the first half and settle into their own game in the second as they began to dominate the falcons.
Unlucky not to convert their impressive attacking forays into goals the bullets had to settle for a 0-0 draw.
Tania Locke picked up the most valuable player award for the night with her massive work rate in defence.
The girls face Tuncurry Forster Hawkettes at South St Tuncurry 7pm this Friday.
