Tight squeeze at top

23 Jan, 2008 08:19 AM
Thursday, January 17 saw teams and spectators alike brave the wet conditions for round 10 for the Bulahdelah Soccer Club twilight competition.

With only two matches remaining before the finals series kicks off players were ready to give their all in the hope of drawing one step closer to getting their hands on the Plough inn Hotel Shield, whilst others were fighting to avoid relegation into the B grade competition.

The afternoon got underway at 5.30pm on field one with Dad’s Army doing battle with Harvey’s Heralds.

Hoping to improve their chances of promotion into the A grade competition Dad’s Army found it tough going against a keen Harvey’s Heralds, going down three to one in what would be the biggest upset of the round.

Field two saw Down to Earth Paving Pythons, also hoping to seal a place in the A grade competition, prove to be too strong for the Myall River Bullrouts wrapping the match up four to one.

The second round of matches kicked off at 6.30pm on field one with current undefeated joint competition leaders K and N Makila Illusions tackling Tea Gardens Hotel. Hoping to continue their surge towards a fourth consecutive title and continue their prospects of wrapping up the minor premiership, the Illusions found themselves up against a sharp Tea Gardens ready to take the match.

With the first half going goal for goal, Tea Gardens were keen to keep the pressure up in the second stanza in the hope of causing a huge upset.

But it wasn’t to be as the Illusions stepped up a gear eventually running away with the match 8 to 3 in a tough contest.

Field two saw the second of the undefeated minor premiership hopefuls the Pink Panthers do battle with Mellow Yellow.

With the teams already cemented in the A grade competition, both were expecting a tough encounter but it was the Pink Panthers who’s impressive form continued, wrapping the match up seven to one.

Round three of matches kicked off at 7.30pm on field one with the 2006/2007 runners up Mayer’s Flat Marauders easily accounting for an enthusiastic Salinga, sealing a 14 to 2 victory.

Field two saw third placed Blue Lightning FC take on the Plough Inn team.

Hoping to keep their chance of a top two finish alive the boys in blue needed to win this one to stay in touch with competition leaders.

Through some sharp shooting Blue Lightning ran away with the game 11 to 2.

With a very tight squeeze at the top of the competition ladder this week’s final round of matches are set to explode, with undefeated teams Illusions and Pink Panthers to take fate into their own hands as they battle it out with one another for the minor premiership, with Blue Lightning snapping at their heels ready to pounce on any chance of stealing a top two finish.
