THE Karuah RSL sponsored Karuah and District Cricket Team hosted the Dungog Pirates at the Karuah Cricket Ground.
The competition leading Pirates went into the game confident of a win based on the Sharks patchy early season form.
The Sharks have bounced back in recent matches with a couple of good wins and a very close loss and sit fourth, only one win away from second place.
The Sharks captain Mark Bills won the toss and batted first on a heavy out field following the recent rains.
The Pirate bowlers were put to the sword early on with Shark Brent Bills being savage on any bowling that resembled loose. His opening shot was a magnificent six and was only one of half a dozen in the early overs.
He was quick to dispatch anything short over mid wicket and if the bowlers over corrected lofted the ball back over their heads.
The early loss of Josh Simms brought Shannon Bills to the crease and he proceed to turn the strike over.
After seven overs the score stood at 1 for 52, then continued on under the blazing bat of Bills to be 2/ 114 at the 20 over drinks break.
Brent Bills ended on 89, he was ably assisted by Shannon Bills with 22 and Sundries was next best with 18. The Sharks lost 8 for 40 in the period after drinks to let the Pirates off the plank and back into the game with a disappointing total of 154 following the early run onslaught.
The Sharks bowlers soon alayed any lingering disapointment from their innings as Josh Simms and Mark Johnson bowled with pace and accuracy to take early Pirate wickets and put the middle order on notice of things to come.
Mark Bills and Brad Pinch both continued the good work with Bills picking up the dangerous Edwards who has scored close to 500 runs for the season and dousing any real hope the Pirates had of continuing their unbeaten run, their innings closing at 114.
Bills the chief destroyer with 3 for 19, Pinch 3 for 29 and the Simms Johnson combination 2 wickets each. The Sharks have now defeated all but one team above them on the table.
