AUSTRALIA'S first major windsurfing event for the year, the Downunder Pro 2012, took place at Jimmys Beach, Hawks Nest last week.
Australia's number one ranked windsurfer Sean O'Brien raced against more than 70 competitors, including Australia's 2012 London Olympic representative for Women's Windsurfing Jessica Crisp.
O'Brien finished in fifth place overall in the Downunder Pro and said competition was very tough, especially with the World Champion Paulo dos Reis from Brazil competing in the event.
"There was quite a lot of international competition," O'Brien said.
The international visitors to the area performed well with Jesper Vesterstrom of Denmark coming in second overall and Wilhelm Schurmann of Brazil taking out third place.
O'Brien said competing at Hawks Nest has given these international windsurfers a chance to get a "leg up with a few extra points" for the world rankings.
Windsurfers have been racing at Jimmys Beach for about nine years in the NSW series and the nationals have been hosted there for the last three years.
"It's a beautiful beach and everything is pretty central," he said.
The competition took place between Friday, January 27 until Saturday, February 4 and the bad weather did not put too much of a damper on things.
"We don't mind getting wet, we're going to get wet anyway," he said.
O'Brien said his next big event was in New Zealand with the national championships being held next month.
The world tour will then take place throughout Europe, starting in April.
