Hawks Nest Golf Club Ladies 21st Classic

06 Mar, 2007 08:53 AM
THE Hawks Nest Golf Club Ladies 21st Classic, proudly sponsored by Hawks Nest First National Real Estate, was held on Monday and Tuesday, February 26 and 27.

The event attracted 220 ladies, four players taking part in a Jean Derrin Event.

The Jean Derrin Trophy is a competition for female golfers who are members of an affiliated club, registered with Women's Golf New South Wales, and have a handicap of less than six. Julie Swanson, one of the players competing in the Jean Derrin Event, equalled the course record on Monday with a 73 scratch and nett score.

Miss Jean Derrin was a NSWLGU counsellor in 1992/ 93 and was the co - originator of the Commonwealth Tournament, captain of the World Cup Team (1964) and past vice president of the ALGU and NSWLGU.

She suffered a massive stroke whilst captaining the World Cup Team and as a result took up painting.

The Jean Derrin Event started in 1971, the trophy presented by NSWLGU to honour Miss Derrin. Miss Derrin had won the Ladies World Championship in France in 1964.

Dolly McDonald, the winner of the first Ladies Classic in 1986, was this year's guest of honour.

Dolly was Hawks Nest Golf Club women's captain for 1980/81, president 1981/82, and captain again from 1982 to 1984. Dolly is now living in Queensland and still enjoys her golf.

Raffle tickets were sold over the two days and raised $951 for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. First prize of a Ralsport golf outfit was won by Helen Brown from Oatlands, second prize of a beautiful painting by Lyn Blake, a local artist and golfer, was won by Pat Dodd from Hawks Nest and third prize, a voucher from Ella's Boutique, was won by J Puxty from Tallwoods. Thankyou to all the locals who donated the 24 prizes for the raffle.

Thankyou to Steve Denning, the club professional, who donated a golf bag, a golf shirt and some balls for the lucky player prizes.

On the Monday everyone enjoyed a fashion parade of Ralsports golf clothing, modelled by our own Hawks Nest lady golfers. Dolly McDonald then cut the enormous birthday cake which was given out with a glass of sparkling wine to celebrate the 21st birthday of the classic.

On the Tuesday evening players were entertained by the newly formed Myall Melodians which was a huge success.

Martin Jones, club president, and Mick Rumble from Hawks Nest First National Real Estate were on hand to present some of the prizes.

Everyone who participated was grateful for the fine weather and the course was a credit to the greens staff, it looked magnificent.
