Hundreds of visitors descended on Hawks Nest last week to participate in the Vet’s Week of Golf held at the Hawks Nest Golf Club and run by the Myall Coast Veterans Golf committee.
While rain came down most days the competition still ran with the tournament being the largest in the eight years it has been running in Hawks Nest.
“They come to play and they will play through most of the adverse conditions,” veteran club member John Pennman said.
Maximum field numbers were 288 and players were visitors to the town coming from all over NSW and Queensland.
Local members of the veterans club were on hand to help but didn’t play in the competition.
The competition has been running at Hawks Nest Golf Club for the past eight years. The Myall Veterans Golf committee applied for the date from the NSW Veteran Golf Association nine years ago and has been holding the event at the same time each year ever since.
“The event is a huge success story through the whole of NSW, a lot of people travel from tournament to tournament,” tournament director Murray Thomas said.
The event at Hawks Nest is one of the biggest tournaments played on a single course and attracts many visitors to the town. Ron and Brenda Poole from Lake Macquarie have been coming to the tournament for six years.
“It is an excellent golf course and an excellent run,” Ron said.
Congratulations to the championship winners.
