TEA Gardens lady bowlers celebrated the joining of their 100th member last Thursday with a luncheon held at the Tea Gardens RS&C Country Club.
Around 60 members and guests gathered to mark the memorable occasion.
Foundation president and life member, Nola Nolan, provided guests with the history of the club, starting with its formation in 1955.
It was then that the Men's Club decided that full facilities be made available to the women to form their own bowling club and the Tea Gardens Women's Bowling Club began with 14 members.
Application was made to join Northumberland District, since renamed Newcastle District, however the State Association denied the application on the grounds that Newcastle already had too many clubs under its jurisdiction.
The Tea Gardens Club was then classified as an isolated club attached to Sydney.
They applied again at a later date and finally, after five years of trying, were granted permission to join Newcastle District Women's Bowling Association.
Dress regulations were strictly adhered to and the wearing of white stockings and a hat on the green was compulsory.
The first Pennant Team in 1967 won their section and the club currently has two Pennant Flags to display.
There have been 14 presidents since 1955 with the current president being Anne Mackenzie.
President Anne greeted the special guests, including George Winter 'Introduction to Bowls' coordinator and wife Dale.
"Without George and the Sunday Bowlers 'Introduction to Bowls' recruitment and encouragement we would not be celebrating today," she said.
Nola Nolan believes the introduction of beige stockings instead of white increased membership, as not everyone wanted to join the ‘White Leghorns.'
"We have now become quite modern in navy blue shorts/slacks and a very smart club shirt. Members seem pleased with these changes," she said.
Both the Women's and Men's Club have combined well over the years with joint games for social and fundraising activities.
This year, for the first time, the quarter final of the James Wall Shield was played on our greens with two local teams competing.
The lady bowlers have supported many charities over the years and this year a record amount of $3,400 was raised for Oncology Day.
"This is the start of a new era with the 100th member joining and we extend a warm welcome to our newest bowler, Dawn Bridges," said Ms Nolan.
