Pennant news

BOTH Pelican Pest Control pennant sides did what they needed to do last Saturday and won their respective matches. This was the last round of sectional play in the Newcastle District Pennant Competition and the results placed the Tea Gardens bowlers on top of their sections.

They will now progress to the post sectional play-offs knock out rounds commencing next Saturday.

The Pelican Pest Control grade six side, the Scintillating Sixes, played at home against Heaton Birmington Gardens and easily overpowered the visitors 88 shots to 28.

It was a marvelous result for such an important match with the three teams all recording impressive wins. Ron James’ team of Peter Oldfield, Bob Foster and Alan McKeough led the way, winning 26 to 5.

Manager of the side, Danny Johnson, led his team of Ken McKeown, Bill Thrift and Terry Eyles to a 34 to 14 victory, while John Ashton skippered Barry Wyness, John Lawson, and Ken Hughes to a 28 to 9 win.

The Pelican Pest Control grade seven side, the Mighty Sevens, consolidated its position on top of its section by defeating Hexham at Hexham 71 to 50.

Barrie,”The Legend”, Lakeman, skippered the most sucessful team on the day, winning 28 shots to 13. His team comprised Laurie Welsh, Col Amos, and Merv Mills.

The first of the post sectional play commences next Saturday.

Both grades are made up of eight sections and each of the sectional winners will contest knock out rounds to determine the Newcastle District Champion for the grade.

The grade winners will then represent Newcastle at the state play-offs later in the year. Good luck Tea Gardens. Go the Dolphins.

The end of season pennant bash for players, reserves, managers and invited guests is set down for Friday June 18. On this occasion the Pelican Pest Control Most Successful Team of the Year will be announced.
