A star in the making

Karuah has a new State Champion.

Fourteen year-old Daniel Evans, who attends Hunter Sports High, recently returned from Wollongong with a championship medal after his touch football side won the NSW Touch Incorporated All Schools Championship.

Daniel's team beat Woodenbong Central School in the final of the years nine and 10 competition in a thriller, with Hunter Sports grabbing the winning try at the end of extra time.

"It was still nil-all at the end of normal time so we went into drop-off," Daniel said.

"That means you lose a player every minute until you get down to three players, then you play on until someone scores."

Daniel first started playing touch as a nine year-old, but as Karuah has no in-town competition, he has to travel to Newcastle to play.

While touch has brought him success, it is rugby league that is Daniel's real passion.

He currently plays for the Myall Coast Junior Hawks in the under 14s competition as five-eighth.

The team remains undefeated this season and is a real chance of making the semi-finals in their first year back in the competition.

Daniel is yet to make the Hunter Sports rugby league squad, but his win at Wollongong has made him that much more determined to succeed.

"League's still my main game," he said.

"I've been making quite a few of the rep camps at Newcastle but at the moment I'm still on the fringes at school."

While national selection is not yet on the cards, Daniel has not ruled out a possible tilt at the nations best.

"I'd love to play against the best in Australia one day," he said.
