ON any night of the week, the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club’s surfboat can be seen out on the Myall River or taking on the waves in the surf.
Since purchasing the boat last October, five crews have formed including a junior team who are now in training to compete at carnivals next season.
Greg Ross from TGHNSLSC said the club decided to buy a surf boat to create entice new members.
“We are trying to keep young kids interested in the surf club,” he said.
Since the junior crew started, Ross said the boys have been taking the boat out almost every day.
Usually following the crew in a tinnie is team coach Laurie Little, who has previously coached surf boat teams at Manly and Queenscliff surf clubs in Sydney.
“They should be up to scratch next season to participate in carnivals and travel around, it’s a good experience,” Ross said.
And it’s not just the younger surf club members who are getting involved.
As a certified sweep is needed for a team to compete, Ross and club president Stephen Howell are among the members in training for the position before completing a course. The crews cater for all ages, right through to veterans and the club is pushing for a women’s team.
“You won’t get a harder sport, it’s great fitness and is open to everyone,” Ross said.
Teams consist of five people, including the sweep and all members must have their bronze medallion. “We’d like to get a sponsor on board and purchase another good second hand boat,” Ross said.
