BULAHDELAH has a new national champion.
Lewis Dorney a 12-year- old, Year 6 student at St Joseph's Bulahdelah, recently travelled to Baradine, six hours west of Bulahdelah to compete in the ABCRA Australian Camp Draft championships.
Lewis returned home from the event as the national champion for Under 13s Australian Camp Draft.
The event was Lewis' first title win. Uniquely one of his biggest rivals for the championship was himself. In most of his events, Lewis enters two horses; Acres of Lace and Bacardi.
At the camp draft championships he came first on Acres of Lace and tied for third and fourth on Barcardi.
Remarkably Lewis has only been competing for 14 months, yet is already earmarked as a star of the future after such early success in the challenging sport of campdrafting.
In the last six months Lewis has really started to make his mark in the camp draft scene. As he has traveled to many places around the state and these are just some of his results; second at Rolland Plains, first and second at Wauchope, second at Gresford, first at Dorrigo, second and fifth at Muswellbrook.
In December Lewis will travel to Tamworth to compete with the top 25 competitors for the National Camp Draft finals.
Lewis hopes to make a career out of this love and passion for horses.
Congratulations Lewis and best of luck in Tamworth.
