Myall Masters Swimming Club

16 May, 2006 09:01 AM
ON Saturday, April 29, seven members of the club travelled in convoy down the expressway to the ultra-modern Peninsula Indoor Aquatic Centre at Woy Woy for a day of competition.

Having just completed the summer season training program, the team was ready to show their talents.

First in the water was Peter Brown in the 60 - 64 years 200m freestyle. Peter swam a strong race to better his personal best time by 10 seconds and win the event. Other results for Peter for the day were 50m breaststroke - 6th, 100m breaststroke - 4th and 100m Individual medley - 1st.

Barbara Gurr, 45 - 49 years, continued with solid swims by gaining first placing in all her events. Barb improved her time by three seconds in the 200m freestyle and cut four seconds from her 100m freestyle swim. A first placing in the 50m backstroke finished a successful meet for Barb.

Chris Marko, 50 - 54 years, had a smile on her face all day and seemed to know she was in for a strong performance. Chris improved by 25 seconds (an amazing accomplishment) in the 200m freestyle placing 6th. Chris continued her improvements in the 50m breaststroke - placing 4th, 100m breaststroke - placing 3rd, and 100m individual medley - placing 4th. With so many PB's Chris would surely be our swimmer of the meet.

Peter Kendall, 75 - 79 years, our Nerong connection, swam strongly, placing 4th in the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke. Peter placed 3rd in the 100m backstroke. Peter is an inspiration to the younger members of the club.

Toni Petterson, 45 - 49 years, celebrated her first meet. Once Toni hit the water her apprehension gave way to strong performances. Toni set a personal best time in the 50m freestyle, placing 4th in what is a highly competitive age group. Toni continued her strong performance in the 50m backstroke, placing 4th.

Robyn Miller, 55 - 59 years, swam with determination to finish 10th in the 50m freestyle. Robyn was kept busy out of the water, in recording the team's efforts during the carnival.

Leon Bobako, 55 - 59 years, swam strongly with 1st places in the 50m, 100m breaststroke and 100m individual medley. Even after stopping to take off his loose goggles, Leon still managed to take 2nd in the 50m butterfly (they will be bigger next time).

Myall Masters competed in the Challenge Relay, 8 x 50m, which included four males and four females, and came 5th in a very strong field.

Myall Masters was ranked 15th out of 29 participating clubs at the carnival. A great result, considering the small number of swimmers representing the club.

The day ended with a sausage sandwich, some liquid refreshments and a two-hour post mortem during the trip home.

End of Summer Training Dinner

MYALL Masters held an "End of Summer Training Dinner" on Monday, May 1, at Acitos Cafe in Hawks Nest.

A fine meal and excellent company gave a fitting end to our summer training season.

Club President and Coach, Leon Bobako, reflected on the season, stating that all members should feel proud of their performances at training.

Leon emphasised the need for club members to develop and undertake an individual fitness program over the winter months - walking, aerobics, line dancing, paddling kayaks, swimming at Raymond Terrace Pool or getting that refreshing swim at Jimmy's Beach.

A number of members will be training at Raymond Terrace Pool over the winter months. A car pool will be operating, so if any member would like to train, please contact Leon on 4997 1878.

Remember when you stop it is really hard to get back that fitness and skill level.

Swim meets are held during the winter months and they are a great way for all members to keep focused. The next Masters swim meet will be at Kurri Kurri on July 1. Notices of upcoming swim and social events will be placed in the window at Acitos Café.

During the summer season we have lived the Masters ethos of Fitness Fun and Friendship. As that famous little fish Nemo said, "Keep on swimming, keep on swimming!"
