DEAD calm conditions throughout June have been contrasted with gale force winds making sailing extremely difficult.
Sailing was made more difficult with weed not being removed from the lake as expected.
Despite the best endeavours of the few hardy souls that attempted to make the lake sailable, weed has paid a large part in destroying the hopes of many when in winning positions.
With all the trials and tribulations of weather and weed, the monthly winner of the Glenn Wyllie trophy was Gerry Weber.
He was closely pursued by Keith Pass, Lily Smith and John McJannett, who finally found out which boat he should be sailing.
As a tribute to the late John Wilson, dear friend, colleague and one of the founding fathers of The Grange Sailing Club, The Grange Cup has been renamed The John Wilson Memorial Trophy in his memory.
Gerry Weber and his Sea Wind had the honour of winning The John Wilson for the six months to June this year. Gerry has been a very consistent sailor and thoroughly deserves his win.
Runners up were Keith Pass and John Slater.
It was great to see practice has finally paid off for Lily Smith.
Lily and her royal blue Soling outlasted the ladies field to win the Lella Starke Memorial Trophy for the first time.
The consistent Coral Welch and Jan Weber pursued Lily all the way.
Well done Lily, a great effort.
Lily has not only defeated the other lady sailors but she is giving many men a run for their money as well.
Well it has been a long time coming, some say three years, some say two, but finally, with a little bit of help from his friends, resident engineering genius and all round good bloke, Charles Ellis completed and launched his much awaited North Wind, aptly named the Saucy Jean, last Saturday.
The event was celebrated with a fabulous morning tea provided by the boats namesake, Jean Ellis.
It was established that the Saucy Jean actually does float and with a bit of practice will be a force to be reckoned with in coming months.
