Saligna takes out Titans

27 Nov, 2008 10:23 AM
ROUND four of the Bulahdelah Twilight Soccer Club competition saw some of the most evenly contested matches of the season.

ThriftyLink Titans started with only four players and finished with five before going down to Saligna. They battled gamely but Saligna played a smart game and used their advantage to finish 5-2 winners. A hat-trick and most valuable player went to Joseph Wright for a non-stop game.

Red Rockets accounted for the SoccerWhos to the tune of 10-0.

They shared it around with seven players getting on the scoresheet but it was Roxanne Syron who took the most valued player, playing her best game to date.

Plough Inn was hoping for their first win but it wasn’t to be, going down 2-1 to Woftam.

This was a game that could have gone either way with Chasse Ede and Dave Morgan missing chances for the luckless pub side.

Most valued player went to Joel Grace who was probably the difference between the two sides.

Down to Earth Paving continued on their way, accounting for RazorBacks 12-0. Brad Keaton scored five to head the golden boot table.

This young team lost their striker to d’Illusioned at the start of the season but haven’t looked back, scoring 48 goals in four weeks to lead the competition and look like contenders for the crown.

It was Josh Little for the RazorBacks who took the most valued player.

The late games saw four undefeated teams facing each other with Dad’s Army snatching a late winner in the dying seconds to defeat Bullrouts 2-1.

Scott Lamborn and Dave Shultz both scored but most valued player went to Jess Cook for the second week in a row.

The match of the round saw three time champions d’Illusioned FC take on defending premiers Mayers Flat Marauders.

These two teams have had some memorable battles and this was no different.

D’Illusioned dominated for almost the entire 50 minutes, constantly pressuring the goals and having the best of the game.

However it was the other team that came away winners.

After going into the break even at 1-1, a John Kell free-kick took a deflection off Jordan Guthrie for an own-goal.

That goal and some desperate defence was enough to get them home 2-1.

Most valued player to Kell.

Round three matches threw up a real mixture with varied results.

Plough Inn had almost a full side but still went down to the young ThriftyLink Titans 3-1.

A very committed Saligna threatened the undermanned Red Rockets, leading twice in the match before injuries to Ross and Ryan Talbot derailed the balance of their side.

Beatle Benson Jnr starred in goals for the Rockets before coming out and scoring two late goals to help his team grab a 4-2 win.

Tea Gardens Hotel took on defending champions Mayers Flat and played strongly in the first half, going to the break 0-0.

Unfortunately, half-time and a calf injury to star goalie Mick Riddett cost them badly as Mayers Flat flexed their muscles and scored five unanswered goals to finish them off.

Most valued player went to Dave Williamson.

Woftam learned first-hand why d’Illusioned FC are among the favourites for the title, going down 10-0.

Hat-tricks to Trent Lamborn and Dylan Guthrie were among the highlights with Lamborn picking up the most valued player.

In the late games, Dad’s Army were expected to win but a lack of numbers and a committed effort by the young RazorBacks saw an exciting see-sawing game.

Luke Mathew scored early for the Razors and they looked like notching the first major upset of the year but a late equalizer to Steve Everingham saw the points shared 1-1.

Josh Little was awesome for Razors but Jess Cook took out the most valued player with a non-stop effort for the five man Army.

The last game of the night saw front-runners Down To Earth Paving Pythons demolish SoccerWhos by a record score 22-1.

By all reports it was a clinical dissection of the newcomers with six players getting on the scoresheet for the Pythons.

However, it was Martin Jones of the SoccerWhos that got the nod for most valued player.

He played brilliantly, never stopped running and was rewarded for his efforts with a late goal.

Round two results: Red Rockets defeated Plough Inn 7-1; Down to Earth Paving Pythons defeated Saligna 5-1; Woftam and Tea Gardens drew 2-2; Dad’s Army defeated SoccerWhos 4-2; d’Illusioned defeated Titans 8-0; Bullrouts defeated RazorBacks 5-1. A

At 6.30pm Red Rockets v RazorBacks; d’Illusioned v Tea Gardens Hotel and 7.30pm sees Bullrouts v Down to Earth Paving & Plough Inn Hotel v Mayers Flat.
