The spring sailing season has been highlighted by good wind, in fact too good on some occasions.
The heavy boats have sought revenge on the lightweight sailors.
During the spring season there has been one near sinking, some vessels dismasted, numerous groundings and some damage to running gear.
Great fun and many frustrations have been the norm.
With his hybrid Glen Wyllie designed boat; John Slater has been the most successful sailor of the season so far.
John has secured the grange cup for a second time and has rounded off his winning run with another October point score victory.
It has not all been smooth sailing however as any one of six sailors had a chance to clutch victory up until the last Saturday of monthly competition.
In a tribute to the late Glen Wyllie, a portrait of his winning boat The Judge (Number 30) has been displayed in the Grange clubhouse.
It looks great and is a welcome addition to the ambience of the clubhouse.
It is pleasing to note the emergence of one of our lady sailors as a future force to be reckoned with.
Lily Smith held off some very stiff and more experienced competition to post a credible second at her last outing and must surely be our most improved sailor.
Coral Welch is also going from strength to strength and looks set to retain the Lella Starke Memorial Trophy.
John Wilson has been welcomed back from illness and is sailing very well.
He tied with John Slater as joint winners of the September point score trophy and was one of those well in contention in October.
It is great to see Colin Farrugia back from a long illness and keen to sail once again.
With a bit of tweaking Col’s Storm will be very competitive over the summer months.
The strong winds have not suited James Mendham and his Seawind but James is practicing hard and is sailing very consistently.
It will not be at all surprising to see him in the winners’ circle very soon.
Another Seawind is under construction.
Finn Sole will soon launch his new challenger and is keen to get involved.
There will then be five Seawind class boats in the club and it will be good to see a Seawind race to determine the best of that class.
