Surf Life Saving Championship season here again

28 Feb, 2006 10:06 AM
ALAN "Laurie" Little of Bundabah and Dennis Searle of Tea Gardens, who are competing for the Masters division of the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club, hope the successes they have had so far this season carry through to the State and Australian Masters Surf Titles to be held in March.

Competing as a two-man team at several Sydney and Newcastle carnivals, as well as at the Hunter Branch Championships, they are unbeaten in the Double Ski and Board Rescue events so far this season in their 60 - 64 yrs age group, while Dennis has also won all the Single Ski and Board events he has contested.

Before moving to Tea Gardens, Dennis previously competed for the Redhead and Swansea-Belmont Clubs, and has had over 40 years experience in Board and Ski competition with results at State, Australian and World Titles. Meeting Laurie while training on the Myall River, he convinced him that teaming up for the double ski was a challenge to suit both their competitive natures.

Laurie, who is new to the board, ski and swim disciplines, has also placed in individual board and relay events so far this season. He hails originally from the Sydney Northern Beaches Club of Manly, where he has achieved State and Australian medals in Surf Boat rowing, competing in Junior, Senior and Masters crews, as well as winning gold in the 2000 World Masters Championships.

Also known since 1991 as a surfboat rowing coach, he guided his Junior, U/21 and Reserve crew charges from both the Manly and then Queenscliff clubs onto the winning of nine State and Australian medals before relocating to Bundabah.

As well as putting in some coaching sessions with our local Nippers before their Junior Surf Life Saving State Titles coming up soon, Dennis and Laurie have been training hard themselves and both are hoping to be able to repeat some of this season's results, at the Masters State at Cronulla and Australian at Kurrawa for their first year representing the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest SLSC.

The Club would also like to wish our nipper representatives, Bayley and Siobhan Larkin and Brin Anseline-McCaskie, the best of luck at the Junior State Championships this weekend. We recognise how well they have done to get to this level and hope they enjoy their competition.
