HAWKS Nest Surf Lifesaving Club (SLSC) is gearing up for the fourth annual Bay to Breakers ocean swim next month.
In a bid to attract more competitors, organisers have moved the race from January to February 13.
SLSC member Stephen Howell said the course is unique compared to other ocean swim events.
“The Bay to Breakers starts with an 800m swim at Jimmys Beach, which goes along the bay inside Port Stephens, then a 500m run through the sand dunes to continue a 1.1km swim along Bennett’s Beach to the surf club,” Howell said.
“It’s a bit different because it combines swimming in the still water of the Bay as well as the surf.”
The Bay also provides an alternative venue as in two previous years the entire race was moved there due to difficult surf conditions.
“It’s the event that can never be cancelled,” Howell said.
Jimmy’s Splash will be on again, an alternative swim covering 800m along Jimmy’s Beach, on the inside of the bay.
The Dash for Cash, a beach event, will also run, open to anyone participating in the Bay to Breakers.
The winner of the open men’s and women’s category will take home $200, while $100 is up for grabs for the under 18s.
A champagne breakfast will be held the following morning at the surf club in conjunction with Valentine’s Day.
Entries are now open for the Bay to Breakers. More information can be found at www.oceanswims.com.
