Thursday walkers celebrate the Christmas festive season

03 Jan, 2006 09:20 AM
A PARTICULARLY popular walk goes across the spit from Fingal Bay to the lighthouse on Point Stephens.

Our chances of doing it looked slim because thunderstorms were forecast for around the time we'd be out there, and critical timing for the tide didn't allow for any time changes.

The little book, "Sheer Grit" by Arthur Murdock always springs to mind when the spit is mentioned. It is in our library and tells the story of the author's solution to the jobless depression years.

He began gathering and selling shell grit to families who kept chooks in those hard times, and his book brings to life the local characters and lighthouse families who lived and worked on and near Stephens Point. It is a charming snapshot of the area and the times.

We'd spent about an hour exploring the island and enjoying wonderful views from the lighthouse, when Kevin began outlining its history, mentioning that many people have drowned on the spit, having left their crossing too late.

Next he was shouting, "No Bob, you don't have to start running."

Not fancying the idea of dodging lightning strikes on the open beach, we set records for the trip back to the cars, eyeing the threatening sky and having had to forego a visit to the little beach where Murdock had his little mine.

However, the storm passed us by, the sky quickly cleared, and we were able to enjoy a delightful barbecue at Fly Point.

Christmas parties seem to get better every year, and our latest was a cracker. Conversations over lunch were a tad unusual as people argued about how to tell the sex of a leech or what Tweedledee's and Tweedledum's battle was over, but one table eventually emerged victorious and claimed the trivia's chocolate prizes.

Walks will not recommence until the first Thursday in March, but there will be a program/planning meeting at 5 Holbert Close, Tea Gardens at 8.30am on February 2. Contacts are Kevin - 4997 1438 and Bob - 4997 1813.
