Thursday Walkers visit Seal Rocks

11 Apr, 2006 10:03 AM
A WEEK of big swells had shored up the spit across to Stephens Point, so for us, crossing was easy, leaving plenty of time to explore and enjoy the lighthouse and the ruins, and to swim in the pretty lagoon at Shell Grit Beach.

National Parks staff who had driven across the spit to spray, stopped to have a word. We very carefully obeyed their direction and refrained from licking the bitou.

Carol discovered a large octopus imprisoned in a rock pool. Ever the trooper, he played with zest to his gallery, 'walking' on submerged rocks, swimming close, impersonating mottled lichen and displaying great bursts of speed across the pool. He became bashful however, as his admirers grew and he disappeared suddenly, without even a curtain call.

The evening barbeque-with-a-view at Fly Point ended an outstanding day. After two back-to-back wonderful outings since the Broughton Island trip, it seemed the bar had been raised to its ultimate notch, but no.

Then came the Seal Rocks three-night camp. There were exciting, demanding walks, swims at lovely beaches in perfect conditions, spectacular scenery at every turn and hilarious evenings with good friends round the barbeque.

From the lighthouse, 360 degrees of magic is spread, and there on the wall is the wistful comment, "Nothing is perfect". Looking round, we felt the need to add, "except the view from here."
