Catch up with Hawk Talk

13 Mar, 2007 11:14 AM
THE Tea Gardens Hawks will knock the rust off this weekend at Metaland Park Raymond Terrace, in the first official trial for 2007.

The new look Newcastle and Hunter League have set down a footy fest to kick off the revamped competition.

All competing sides will turnout on the day, in an effort to grade 24 teams into three competitions.

The Hawks are drawn to play Clarencetown at 11am on Sunday, March 18, in the opening game of 12 set down for the day.

The competition starts on the weekend of March 31, with the competitions to be named after this weeks trial games.

The Hawks will field as many as eight new players this year. Coach Anthony Faint has recruited well.

To date, training has been sound, with numbers at times disappointing. Work commitments have been a major reason.

Training the house down has been lock Luke Worth, and last years hooker Ben Burgess. Backing up from last year are Clayton Bloomfield, Paul Chapman and Jed Malone.

Half back Shane Ping will turn out again along with Luke Tansey, Chris Sheals and BLT (big Luke Thompson).

Trent Murphy will make an appearance for the trial before returning interstate for work.

Brad (beefy) Victor, Daniel Ridley and Chasse Ede have made a couple of appearances at training.

Although lacking depth at the early part of the season, the players and committee are confident of a good showing in 2007.

Of note are the new style jumpers this year. The new strip will be on display this weekend, with president Rob Smith taking the opportunity to thank this years jumper sponsors for their effort.

The Hawks 100 Club for 2007 has commenced with its first draw held on Wednesday, January 31. The draw is now into week seven, with the jackpot being claimed twice.

The club's first function was held in February, with members and their family enjoying a free barbeque and drinks.

Some numbers are still vacant. Contact the Hawks info line on 0427 602 197 for further information.
