Fainty to coach Hawks

23 Jan, 2007 03:22 PM
THE Tea Gardens Hawks have built well for 2007.

A strong committee has been formed, with secretary Neil Reynolds, being able to pass on many roles to dedicated members.

He says he may be able to concentrate on one more year of football, to play in the new Newcastle and Hunter League.

The Hawks have agreed to terms with a coach for season, Anthony Faint has spoken to officials, and will lead the Hawks throughout the year. A past player with the club, Fainty will also have two or three players joining him, including 2001 Rookie of the Year Matty Taylor.

Anthony is a no nonsense front rower, who has player at representative level in the Newcastle area. He played for the Hawks in 2001, where he is best remembered for his game against Fingal Bay when he left their star ex national league player face down in the Myall Park turf.

With him will be a second front rower, a back rower, and a utility back. Matty Taylor should fit into the centre position, where he left of in 2001.

At the early stages of the season, player numbers look promising. The basis of last year's side will back up this year, along the experienced players Fainty will bring with him.

A meet the coach day was held last Saturday, and training has commenced on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 6.30pm. Trial games are set down for mid March, with the first round to kick off on the weekend of March 31.

The competition format has not been set down yet, however the Hawks are expected to start in the lower grade based on last year's player strength. The Newcastle and Hunter League will endeavour to grade teams based on player registrations. New teams in the competition will include Stroud and Medowie.

Along with major sponsors, the Tea Gardens Hotel Motel, The Hawks are looking toward an improved year. The hotel has continued their valuable support for the 2007 season.

The Hawks 100 Club will continue in season 2007. Following closely on last years' format, the 100 Club will start its first draw for 2007 on Wednesday, January 31. The draw will be at 7pm at the Hotel. Club members do not have to be at the hotel to claim the main prize.

A weekly jackpot, sponsored by the pub will be won if the member is at the pub for the draw. Numbers are still available. The first 100 Club function will be held at the pub on Sunday, February 25. Contact 0427 602197 for further information.
