Hawks defeated in opening match

24 Mar, 2010 12:57 PM
TEA Gardens Broadmeadow Motors Hawks were defeated in their opening trial match at Raymond Terrace sports complex on Sunday.

Playing in extreme heat, the Hawks went down by 26 points to 10 against Wangi Warriors. Officials described it as a disjointed display and the locals never took a backward step against a much more experienced Warriors outfit.

For the Hawks, Matt Browne stood out in defence. Jamie McSpadden continued his dynamic work at halfback, and Clayton Bloomfield showed the benefits of an off season fitness regime.

New recruits David Edmonds gave a strong display at hooker, while Pat Pages’ effort at five eight was tradesman like.

James Bradley was busy all day, And Michael Sharkey stood out in attack. Michael Morten had a sound game in the centres. Brooke Roach was happy with the team’s potential, emphasising that it was the first hit out, with many new faces yet to form a combination.

The Hawks will play a second trial match on Saturday March 27 at Raymond Terrace.

The time and opposition will be named during the week.
