IN a standout showing the Tea Gardens Hotel Hawks defeated East Maitland by 40 points to 16 on Sunday in Maitland.
In a reversal of last weeks effort, the Hawks played a more constructive second half, after a mistake riddled first. Twelve unforced errors were recorded in the first 40 minutes of play.
Lock Matt Browne opened the scoring in the twelfth minute before East Maitland scored out wide to make the score six points to four. From broken play, replacement second rower Temo Marks kicked an unplanned banana ball for Trent Murphy to score. East Maitland tested the Hawks commitment in defence prior to the half time bell and the visitors were found wanting as the hooter sounded. A soft try under the post saw the Hawks lead reduced to 12 points to 10. In the second half, front rower Scott Peachman’s lead up work with a line break and a great inside ball left Ben Feeney with three players to beat. A strong individual effort to score got the Hawks to an 18 - 10 lead. Two tries in six minutes to front row partner Clayton Bloomfield extended the lead by 28 points to 10. Brooke Roach scored a trademark try under the post with eight minutes to go. Second rower Travis Markey sealed the game, scoring with four minutes from time while lock Matt Browne converted six of the seven tries.
