A GRAND final victory was celebrated long and hard over the weekend after the Tea Gardens Hotel Hawks defeated the Wangi Warriors at Charlestown on Saturday.
In a thrilling finish, a Brooke Roach and Jason Purdon combination set up a try in the dying seconds of the game. Wangi had taken a two point lead with eight minutes to play. Desperation defence from the Hawks had the Warriors contained on their 20 metre line for the last five minutes. The Hawks were unable to crack Wangi’s defence. On the sixth tackle, and 12 metres out, Brooke Roach dived over out wide of a Jason Purdon pass, to give the Hawks a 26 point to 24 win.
Matthew Browne was judged by the Newcastle and Hunter League as the Man of the Match. For the Hawks, Brooke Roach scored two tries, and Josh Fidden, Ryan Saunders, and Tyson Jolly scored one each. Matt Browne converted three goals from five attempts.
Awards: Best forward three points went to Matt Browne. Trent Murphy received two points and Brooke Roach one. Best back was Tyson Jolly. Two points went to Jamie McSpadden, and one point to Ryan Saunders. The Jack Craig Nolan Players Player award was won by Brooke Roach. The Waco Kwikform Supporters Award was won by Ryan Saunders ahead of Tyson Jolly and Jason Purdon.
The Hawks will hold their annual Presentation Night at the Tea Gardens Hotel on Saturday, October 17.
