Hawks swoop on Panthers

31 Mar, 2010 11:40 AM
TEA Gardens Broadmeadow Motors Hawks beat the Mallabula Panthers on Saturday at Raymond Terrace Sports Complex.

In the second trial and in very warm conditions, the Hawks proved too strong for an under strength opposition.

Tries were scored by Jamie McSpadden, Matt Browne, Josh Fidden and David Edmonds, with one try to the Panthers, going down 20 to 4.

Best player on the Hawks was centre Michael Morten, whose effort at centre in defence was dominant.

Brooke Roach took the ball up strongly, as did Nick Lagudi and Michael Sharkey.

Matt Browne continues to put in a 100 per cent effort each week.

Anthony Carter gave a strong one-on-one defensive display and Michael Johnson did some good work on the wing.

Promising utility player Mitchell Hayne had to leave the field five minutes into the second half with a broken ankle.

The teams now await the competition committee’s decision on the season format and how the team will be graded.

The Hawks have shown enough in the trials to be competitive in A grade but will struggle against the top end of the table. It will be a challenge.

The draw for the season will be out by April 1 and the first match will be played April 10 - 11.

The first home game will be played at Myall Park Oval on Sunday April 18.

The game will start at 2.30pm, with entertainment and Hawks new membership initiatives. Memberships are still available.
