THE Tea Gardens Hotel Hawks won their first competition game in season 2009, defeating Swansea by 22 points to 18.
In a scrappy first half of football, the Hawks were disjointed and lacked any cohesion in attack. Poor options with the ball, and handling errors saw them defending for most of the first half. Down by 12 points to six 30 minutes into the game, the team was given a reality check at the break, with an emphasis on getting back to basics. The Hawks bounced back early, with a great try from centre Trent Saunders. Second rower Mike Nanai followed up with a bustling try to get the side in front by 14 points to 12. Neither try was converted in the blustery conditions. Swansea responded with a converted try 10 minutes from fulltime. A crucial mistake by Swansea from the kick off gave the Hawks the chance to attack the Swansea line. Trent Saunders scored his third try of a well organised set of play. Still unable to convert, the Hawks trailed by two points, with minutes left on the clock. Winger Chad Taylor sealed the match with a great individual try in the corner.
Best for the Hawks was replacement second rower Travis Markey. Simon Spooner gave a strong performance at fullback, supported by centres Trent Saunders and Josh Fidden. Trent Murphy had a busy day in the second row, with lock Matt Browne standing out in defence. The Referees Best and Fairest went to Simon Spooner. Travis Markey was voted players player, best back was Trent Saunders and best forward went to Matt Browne. The supporter’s three points went to Trent Murphy, two points to Trent Saunders, and one point to Travis Markey.
The competition will take a weeks break over the Anzac Day weekend. The Hawks will play Gloucester at Myall Park the following week. The game will kick off at 2.30pm on Sunday May 3.
