Rain ruins league season

28 Jun, 2007 07:50 AM
Following the disastrous weather conditions of the June long weekend, the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby League and the Newcastle Junior League competitions have had two full rounds of matches postponed.

With the Hawks' competition in disarray, the League's committee will decide on the format for the rest of the year at a meeting set down for the Maitland Leagues Club on Wednesday night. At this stage, the round nine away game against Dudley has been postponed to round 18, replacing the Hawks home game against Kotara.

Last week's away game against Stockton will be played by extending the competition by one week.

This will mean the Hawks will play Stockton, at Stockton, twice within three weeks, effectively giving the locals three away games in as many weeks. The Myall River Juniors are in a similar position, with one round already postponed earlier in the season and two more since the long weekend.

Rescheduling of games has been done on a week to week basis to date, leaving the original competition draw in chaos.

A meeting planned this week hopes to finalise the rest of the season's draw. The Juniors are enjoying a great year on the paddock, with the Bulahdelah Bowling Club sponsored under 14s side undefeated at the top of the table.

Coach Jason Slockee is enthusiastic about their efforts and the support shown for the team.

The Tea Gardens Earthmoving sponsored under 16s team has enjoyed mixed success after being elevated a grade and on their day can extend any side in the competition.

Coach Wayne Dawson is happy with his team's performances to date and is confident of more consistency in the second part of the season.

The club has planned a home game to be staged at Bulahdelah before the season's end. This is in recognition of the town's input into the success of the Myall Juniors inaugural year. A date is yet to be confirmed following the competition's disrupted draw.

This week the Juniors are expected to play at Myall Park on Saturday. Date and times to be confirmed.

In Hawks news, the club has met with the Raymond Terrace Magpies in an effort to ensure a team survives in Tea Gardens Hawks Nest in the future.

In a redistributed boundary selection, Raymond Terrace is now the Hawks' district club. Magpies President Joe Cappiello was impressed with the Hawks committee and forum and gave support to the club's efforts.

Initiatives include combined training and skills sessions. The 100 Club's 'champagne breakfast' was a great success. The club would like to thank the Tea Gardens Hotel kitchen staff for their efforts.

Last week's 100 Club draw (week 21) was won by number 95, Rod Morrison. The jackpot was not won and now stands at $180. The July payment is now due. The Hawks play Kotara Bears this Sunday at Myall Park.

The match is set down for 2pm. A win will see the Hawks leapfrog into fifth position. This game will gauge the club's ability to bother the front runners for the rest of the season.
